Doge has been Used by Elon Musk to Gain Access to Treasury Department Data.
(VOR News) – A U.S. judge granted an emergency order Saturday morning that prevents Elon Musk’s government reform team from accessing the Treasury Department’s database of the financial and personal data of millions of Americans, according to court records.
“All political appointees, special government employees, and government employees detailed by an agency external to the Elon Musk Treasury Department” are not allowed to access Treasury Department payment systems and related data, according to a ruling by US District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer.
Those who downloaded data from the Treasury Department’s databases following President Donald Trump’s January 20 inauguration must “immediately destroy any and all copies of material downloaded,” according to the interim restraining order. Until a hearing on February 14, this order is in force.
The wealthiest person in the world, Elon Musk, is in charge of Trump’s efforts to reduce federal spending through the Department of Government Efficiency.
On Friday, attorneys general from 19 states filed lawsuits against Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the Treasury Department, and the Republican president. They claimed that by giving Musk’s DOGE staff exclusive access to private Treasury Department documents, the government had broken the law.
The CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and X has not been classified as a “special government employee,” in spite of US media reports earlier this month.
Neither Elon Musk nor his company works for the federal government.
DOGE’s comprehensive status must be approved by Congress. In the early weeks of the new administration, Elon Musk, a well-known Trump supporter and fundraiser, and his team accelerated efforts within federal departments.
They cut budgets, stopped foreign aid initiatives, and attempted to fire a large number of government workers.
Early on Saturday, Judge Engelmayer’s ruling on “Unfettered Access” was released, stating that the party who filed the complaint will “suffer irreparable harm without injunctive relief.”
“This is attributable to the heightened vulnerability of the systems in question to hacking compared to their prior state, as well as the risk posed by the new policy regarding the disclosure of sensitive and private information,” stated the official.
Outrage erupted when it was revealed last week that Elon Musk and his collaborators had gained access to private Treasury Department documents. According to an internal Treasury assessment, the DOGE team’s access to government payment systems was “the most significant insider threat the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) has ever encountered,” according to US media.
States like California and New York filed the Elon Musk case, alleging that the Trump administration let “at least one 25-year-old DOGE associate” have “virtually unfettered access” to BFS payment systems, allowing them to see or alter several important documents.
This access “poses significant cybersecurity risks, including threats to states and their residents that their information may be utilized and processed in a manner prohibited by federal law,” the lawsuit, Elon Musk filed late Friday in the US District Court in Manhattan, claims.
There are also reports that data from multiple federal ministries is being sent to an open-source Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that is privately owned and run by a third party.
Attorney General Matthew Platkin of New Jersey said Friday that Trump has “allowed an unelected billionaire to infiltrate critical federal agencies and systems that protect Social Security numbers, banking information, and other highly sensitive data for millions of individuals.”
More challenges.
There have been more legal challenges as a result of Trump’s swift implementation of a reconfiguration of the federal budget and workforce.
A magistrate has rejected an attempt to nullify the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship. Prior to the proceedings next week, a different court on Thursday halted an attempt to offer government workers mass buyouts.
Because it offers humanitarian aid all around the world, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is currently a popular target.
Under the Trump administration, USAID’s workforce has been reduced from 10,000 to about 300 employees. Many foreign-based workers have also been Elon Musk ordered to return to the United States.
Labor groups are contesting the assault’s legality. A federal court halted preparations on Friday to provide 2,200 USAID employees with paid leave ahead of the weekend.
Trump’s plan to disband government agencies without legislative approval is illegal, according to Democrats.
