CHINA: US Blacklists 6 Chinese Entities Over Balloon Program

BEIJING, China — As retaliation for what it says was a China spy balloon that flew through U.S. airspace, the U.S. has blacklisted six Chinese entities it says are connected to Beijing’s space programs.

The five companies and one research institute will have a harder time getting American technology exports because of the announced economic restrictions on Friday. These restrictions are related to the Biden administration’s promise to think about bigger ways to stop Chinese spying.

The move will likely exacerbate the diplomatic row between the United States and China sparked by the balloon, which was shot down last weekend off the coast of North Carolina. The U.S. says the balloon could pick up and record intelligence signals, but Beijing says it was just a weather craft that got off course.

The incident prompted Secretary of State Antony Blinken to cancel an important trip to Beijing aimed at defusing tensions.

The U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security went after the six organizations because they “supported China’s efforts to modernize its military, especially the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) aerospace programs, such as airships and balloons.”

China Angry Over The Balloon

“The PLA is using High Altitude Balloons (HAB) for intelligence and reconnaissance operations,” the statement said.

On Twitter, Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves said that his department “will not be afraid to use” these restrictions and other regulatory and enforcement tools “to protect U.S. national security and sovereignty.”
The six companies involved.

The research institute did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The other five entities were unable to be reached.

On President Joe Biden’s orders, a U.S. military fighter jet shot down an unknown object flying off the remote northern coast of Alaska on Friday. The object was shot down because it allegedly threatened the safety of civilian flights rather than because it was engaged in surveillance.

But the fact that the two events happened so close together shows that more people are worried about China’s surveillance program and want Biden to take a strong stand against it.
