The actress disclosed in an interview with Hoda Kotb that she and her husband, Will Smith, have led “completely separate lives” since 2016. The well-known Hollywood couple wed in 1997 and have previously discussed marital issues and separations, but never this specifically.
Pinkett Smith told Kotb in a Wednesday “Today” clip that while it is not a legal divorce, it is essentially a divorce without documents. From Smith’s first marriage, Pinkett and Smith have two children, Willow and Jaden, and a son, Trey.
Will and Pinkett-Smith representatives should have responded immediately when queried for comment.
The revelation surprised numerous individuals, especially in light of Pinket’s candidness in her “Red Table Talk” series, during which she and Will discussed her extramarital relationship in a 2020 episode and the backhand she received at the 2022 Academy Awards. Will infamously approached presenter Chris Rock onstage at the ceremony and struck Rock after Rock remarked on Pinkett’s tresses.

On October 13 at 8:00 p.m. ET, the interview will be featured in an hour-long NBC News prime-time special. In addition, Pinkett’s memoir “Worthy,” published on October 17, will provide additional information regarding their relationship, life, and her Baltimore upbringing.
She told Kotb, “By 2016, we had simply become exhausted from trying.” “I believe we were both somewhat mired in our idealized conceptions of what the other individual ought to be.”
Pinkett further stated that she has been unable to proceed despite contemplating divorce.
“I swore to you that we would never find ourselves in a situation where we needed to divorce.” “We shall resolve… whatever,” she declared.
Pinkett revealed in a recent interview with People Magazine that she initially believed the strike to be a skit.
“I thought to myself, ‘Will never hit him,'” Pinkett remarked. “My realisation that it was not a skit did not occur until Will began to return to his chair.”
Smith issued multiple public apologies regarding the incident that resulted in a ten-year prohibition from participating in any academy event, including the Oscars.
