Walmart customers might receive up to $500 as part of a class-action lawsuit settlement over charges that the retailer overcharged customers for specific products.

A case, filed in late 2022 and then revised in 2023, claimed that Walmart “falsely inflated” the pricing of certain sold-by-weight products, including those with the retailer’s “rollbacks,” or discounts.

It claimed customers at the checkout were misled into believing they were paying cheaper for items such as meats, poultry, and shellfish.

The lawsuit also claimed that Walmart mislabeled the weight of bagged produce such as oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines by falsely portraying the weight as more than the actual weight of such grocery products.

Walmart negotiated a $45 million deal with customers late last year, denying wrongdoing.

Walmart told CNN on Friday that it “will continue to provide our customers with everyday low prices to help them save money on the products they want and need.” We continue to refute the charges, but a resolution is in the best interests of both parties.

According to the settlement terms, any consumer who purchased weighted products and bagged citrus at a Walmart store, supercenter, or neighborhood market in the United States or Puerto Rico between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, may be entitled to cash reimbursement.

The cash payments will vary according to what was purchased over the period.

They include:

-$10 without a receipt, but a consumer may swear to purchase up to 50 weighted products and bagged citrus in person at a store location during the settlement class period.

-$15 without a receipt or other proof of purchase, but they can witness purchasing 51–75 weighted products and bagged fruit.

-$20 without receipts or proof of purchase; nonetheless, they may certify purchasing 76 to 100 weighted products and bagged fruit.

-$25 without receipts or evidence of purchase, but must certify to purchasing 101 or more weighted products and/or bagged fruit.

Customers who provide receipts or other proof of purchase for any weighted goods and bagged citrus purchased at a store during the settlement class period will receive 2% of “the total cost of the substantiated Weighted Goods and Bagged Citrus Purchased,” up to $500.

Customers can also try to retrieve receipts from the Walmart website.

Customers can submit a claim online or by mail, postmarked on or before June 5, 2024.
