US Officials Pledge Support for Thailand’s Drug Fight in Meeting with PM Srettha
The US ambassador, together with two top enforcement officials, pays Srettha a courtesy call to underline their support.
On Wednesday, US Ambassador to Thailand Robert Frank Godec paid a courtesy call to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and expressed his support for Thailand’s fight against drug misuse and trafficking.
He was joined by Roshni Nirody, director of the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), and Mark Snyder, assistant regional director of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Chai Wacharonke, the government’s spokesman, stated that the premier informed the US delegation that his administration was serious about drug control.
He stated that he had issued a policy requiring police and other concerned agencies to produce tangible results within the first 90 days of his term, and that the first 60 days had already passed.
Srettha also stated that his administration would welcome US aid and cooperation in preventing drug smuggling across borders.
Chai said the US ambassador praised Thailand’s leadership in combating drug trafficking in the region.
The ambassador stated that the United States was eager to share its drug-suppression experience and strengthen collaboration with the Thai government to combat trafficking.
The ambassador also promised financial assistance and technologies to help Thailand detect and prevent drug smuggling, as well as the opportunity to train Thai drug enforcement officers.
The two sides also committed to maintain tight cooperation between Thailand’s Narcotics Control Board and the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
Aside from working with Thailand to combat drug trafficking, the ambassador stated that the US would also seek to collaborate with Thailand’s neighbours to combat drug smuggling.
