Trudeau Reverses His Stance on Ukraine Ahead of Trump Presidency

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told reporters that the conflict in Ukraine could end in the new year and that allies wouldn’t be able to support Kyiv if President Trump withdraws US assistance.

The war in Ukraine is hurting the entire world, and the longer it goes on, the worse the consequences will be for everyone. “There may be windows that can occur in the coming months,” he stated.

All of us and all of the international community must do whatever it takes to help bring an end to this war of aggression on Ukraine’s terms, which will require the United States’ cooperation during Donald Trump’s presidency.

“Let’s also be very blunt: all the allies in the world would not be able to replace a complete withdrawal from supporting Ukraine by the United States”, he said.

Trudeau has given more than $12.8 billion to Ukraine, saying Canada stands with Ukraine for as long as it takes to secure victory. However, shortly after Trump was elected president, critics accused the prime minister of breaking his word.

Now Trudeau has indicated support for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin,  saying it was good to have a line of communication open to Putin.

“We all recognize how vital it is to put an end to the violence in Ukraine and conflicts around the world. “That necessitates a level of engagement with counterparts with whom we frequently disagree,” he said.

Scholz spoke with Putin on Nov. 15 for the first time in nearly two years. The German chancellor condemned Russia’s war, urged Putin to withdraw his troops, and discussed potential talks with Kyiv.

The call sparked anger in Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelensky saying the conversation opens a “Pandora’s box” for further engagement and that “it is extremely important for Putin to loosen his isolation, Russia’s isolation.”

President-elect Donald Trump has promised to resolve the war quickly by bringing Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table. His anticipated return to the White House has also raised concerns that Washington may withdraw its assistance, requiring Europe and other allies to significantly increase their contributions.

Meanwhile, Outgoing President Joe Biden has approved Ukraine’s use of US-supplied long-range missiles to target Russia.

For months, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the lifting of missile limits known as ATACMS, which would allow Kyiv to attack beyond its boundaries.

On Sunday, he responded to the reports, stating that “such things are not announced, missiles speak for themselves”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned Western nations against such a step, claiming that it would constitute the NATO military alliance’s “direct participation” in the Ukraine conflict.
