Polymarket’s Odds of Trudeau Resignation Surge to 92% Sunday
Calls for Trudeau to step down grew over the holidays from caucus members across the country.

Canada’s national Liberal caucus will hold a special meeting this Wednesday to develop a strategy for ensuring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation. Polymarket’s odds of Trudeau resigning surged from 33% to 92% Sunday.

The Liberal caucus’ regional chairs met on Friday afternoon to discuss Trudeau’s continued leadership and next steps. The prime minister returned to Ottawa today but has yet to signal that he is prepared to address the growing calls for his resignation.

During that virtual call, regional caucus representatives planned to ask national caucus chair Brenda Shanahan to consider convening a meeting of all Liberal MPs.

That request has been granted, and the meeting will be lengthy. Trudeau will face his MPs for the first time since telling them he would be reflecting on his political future during the holidays.

This comes as some MPs call for Trudeau to be presented with a more formal resignation request or to set a deadline for deciding whether he will continue as party leader.

According to the most recent Angus Reid poll in Canada, the governing Liberals have 16% support, potentially leaving them with as few as 5 seats in parliament.

Trudeau to Resign

Globe and Mail columnist Lawrence Martin, well-connected in Ottawa’s political circles, believes he is expected to resign as Liberal Party leader on Monday.

The Globe and Mail columnist does not identify the sources because they are not authorized to discuss internal party matters.

While specifics about the timing remain unknown, those familiar with the situation believe the announcement will occur before Wednesday’s critical national caucus.

According to the source, his advisers are considering how he can remain Prime Minister while a new Liberal leader is selected. They believed he would remain in his position until a new leader was chosen.

Liberal candidates for leadership include Ms. Freeland, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Transport Minister Anita Anand, former central banker Mark Carney, and former British Columbia Premier Christy Clark.

Polls over the last year have shown the Conservatives a double-digit lead over the ruling Liberals. According to an Angus Reid poll released on Friday, the Liberals have only 13% of voter support under Mr. Trudeau, but those numbers could change if a new leader is elected.
