PARIS, France – A powerful explosion struck a building on Paris’ Left Bank on Wednesday, injuring 24 people and setting a fire that sent smoke billowing over major monuments and caused the evacuation of nearby buildings, according to police. The cause of the explosion remained unknown at the time.

According to a Paris police officer, the facade of a building in the 5th arrondissement, or district, crumbled, and rescue personnel were working to discover if anyone was still inside. The blast occurred close to the old Val de Grace military hospital.

The building where the explosion occurred, according to Paris police head Laurent Nunez, was a private school, the Paris American Academy, which was founded in 1965 and provides classes in fashion design, interior design, fine arts and creative writing.

The fire was put out but not completely quenched. Approximately 270 firefighters and 70 emergency vehicles were on the site to extinguish the flames.

Injuring 24 people and setting a fire that sent smoke billowing over major monuments caused nearby buildings’ evacuation.

According to a Paris police officer, 24 individuals were hurt, including four in critical condition and 20 with less serious injuries. According to the source, most injuries were received when the blast blew people off their feet.

According to 5th arrondissement officials, a gas leak was the cause of the bomb and fire.

“The explosion was extremely violent,” District Mayor Florence Berthoud said, describing glass shards falling from buildings.

According to the Paris prosecutor, an investigation into aggravated involuntary harm has been launched, and the investigation will look into whether a suspected violation of safety laws caused the explosion.

According to Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau, investigators will try to “determine whether or not there was a failure to respect a rule or individual imprudence that led to the explosion.”

Nunez, the Paris police head, said firemen prevented the fire from spreading to two neighboring buildings, which had been “seriously destabilised” by the explosion and had been evacuated. According to witnesses and the police commander, the explosion blew out multiple windows in the neighborhood.

By Wednesday evening, smoke was no longer visible emanating from the structure. Ambulances continued to wail as they passed through the neighborhood, but locals were beginning to move freely again on the street, rue Saint-Jacques, which had been closed off earlier.

A private school student stated he was in a building approximately 100 meters (yards) from the explosion.

“I was sitting on the windowsill, and we moved 2 metres away from the window, carried by a small blast (from the explosion) and huge fear,” Achille, who did not provide his last name, told BFM television.

We came down (from the building) and saw the flames,” he recalled. “The police were extremely helpful, and we were able to evacuate quickly.”

Paris is no stranger to gas explosions, with over 2 million people packed within the city limits and ancient, sometimes aging, infrastructure. A bomb in the 9th district in January 2019 killed four people and injured hundreds more.
