LONDON, England, Bog Championships – On Sunday, brave racers wore snorkels and slithered through sludge in the World Bog Snorkelling Championships, one of Britain’s oddest sports events.

In the tiny Welsh village of Llanwrtyd Wells, contestants compete to complete two lengths of a 60-yard (55-meter) water-filled trench cut through a peat bog. They can wear flippers on their feet, but traditional swimming strokes are prohibited.

Some candidates dressed their snorkels, masks, and flippers with more extravagant touches, such as one who wore a large plastic toad on their head and another who wore a flower-adorned swimming cap. Spectators also joined in the fun, with two dressed in pink cardboard boxes proclaiming themselves to be limited edition bog-snorkeling Barbie and Ken.

Competitors in the 35th annual competition hoped to break the existing world record of 1 minute, 18 seconds set by Neil Rutter in 2018.
