Tom Holland Recalls Being “Enslaved” To Alcohol Before Sobriety Journey
Tom Holland is up about his troubles before embarking on his sober journey.
The Spider-Man actor, who has been clean for over a year, recently reflected on the magnitude of his alcohol intake, adding that it hurt his daily life.
“I was definitely addicted to alcohol, I was not shying away from that at all,” Tom admitted on the July 10 episode of On Purpose with Jay Shetty. “I believe that anyone who drinks a beer every day has a bit of a problem.”
In his experience, the 27-year-old stated that he would “drink and drink and drink and drink,” until he hit a breaking point.
“And then you’d just have that feeling like, ‘Wow, I shouldn’t have had that last beer,'” the actor continued. “And the next day you wake up with a terrible headache.”
Tom’s alcohol consumption had him asking, “Why does this drink enslave me?” “What is it about this drink that has me so obsessed?” I would look back and recognize that I would go to events for work,” he continued, “and, you know, I can’t enjoy myself until I’ve had a few beers, and I just felt so much pressure.”

Tom avoided areas with alcohol in the early days of his sober journey but subsequently changed his mind.
“I didn’t feel like I could go and not have a drink because of the stress of it,” he explained, “but then after a while, I was like, ‘Mate, you’ve got to pull your socks up here.'” You can’t just stay home constantly; you must get out and enjoy yourself.
And suppose you’re only having fun because you’re drinking. In that case, you’ve got a serious problem.” Tom has discovered “really good replacements things” that emulate the “ritual of cracking something open, sharing it with friends, and drinking it—whether it’s sparkling water or a beer.”
And his health has improved dramatically since he stopped drinking.
“I could sleep better and handle problems better,” Tom said. “Things that would normally irritate me on set, I could take in my stride.” I had so much more mental clarity. I felt better. “I felt stronger.”
