Tom Hanks’ Niece, Carly, Addresses Her Reaction To 1st Claim To Fame Elimination
Chet Hanks Tells the TRUTH About Growing Up as Tom Hanks’ Son
Life is like a box of chocolates in that you never know what you’ll get—or, in this case, what will give you away.
Carly Reeves’ connection to Tom Hanks was uncovered during the season 2 premiere of ABC’s Claim to Fame. Carly is the two-time Oscar winner’s niece via marriage—the niece of his wife Rita Wilson—but program producers and ABC execs advised she chose the Castaway actor as her relative because of his celebrity.
And that decision may have earned her the show’s first elimination, as Forrest Gump clues readily revealed Carly’s celebrity cousin.
“I was in a complete fog,” the 39-year-old said of her departure. “I don’t remember seeing Tom’s picture.” My eyes were dripping with tears. I was sobbing so hard that I couldn’t even breathe. I was just a little hyperventilating because I was astonished.”
Her family connection was uncovered when the images of a ping pong paddle and a park bench were linked to Tom’s 1994 hit.
During the premiere, Carly remarked, “His freakin’ clues are so freakin’ obvious.” “There is no mention of benches in any other film.” Gabriel [another contestant] figured it out as well. He’s not even intelligent.”

“I didn’t even get to do any challenges!” she said. “I didn’t deserve it!” I should spend more time in front of the camera! I should stay longer!”
Carly’s elimination during the first episode of the season means she will not be eligible for the $100,000 prize, which is offered to the competitor who can successfully conceal their identity for the length of the show.
Carly was dissatisfied with the producers’ choice of Forrest Gump, which she saw as an easy giveaway for an actor like Tom, who has had many big triumphs.
“I felt like I didn’t get as easy of a game as everyone else,” she told USA Today. “They could have used a million different clues from his different movies, but they chose to use his most famous film and make three clues about it.” I thought I didn’t have a decent chance and felt it was all set up to make me go.”
On the other hand, Carly says she doesn’t regret her dramatic final moments since that’s just who she is.
“Honestly, I’m emotional, so I’m going to react strongly,” she explained. “Could I have handled myself better and been more graceful?” Yes. But everything about being upset and depressed was true. So I can’t say I’m sorry.”
