Time Magazine Names Donald Trump 2024 Person of the Year
Time magazine has named Donald Trump its Person of the Year for 2024, sparking widespread debate and strong reactions after a highly divisive election that sparked intense debate across America.
He previously won the honour after winning the presidential election in 2016.
Time Magazine Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs credited Trump with “marshalling a comeback of historic proportions” and “driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment” that had reshaped the American presidency and altered the US’s role.
This week’s Time Magazine cover features President-elect Trump, who defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the election on November 5. He is wearing his signature red tie and displaying a thoughtful expression.
Accompanying the announcement of the selection was a comprehensive interview that covered topics such as the economy, the circumstances in Ukraine and the Middle East, and his election triumph.
Time magazine started in 1927
He also discussed the future of the MAGA movement and his intentions for a second term, which includes pardoning the defendants in the January 6 rebellion and deporting millions of migrants.
The “Man of the Year” award, which Time magazine first presented in 1927, honours an individual or movement that “for better or for worse… has done the most to influence the events of the year.”
Other past winners include Greta Thunberg, a climate change activist; former President Barack Obama; Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta; Pope Francis; and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In the end, Time Magazine editors choose the winner.
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Princess of Wales, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk—who is now a close buddy of Trump and will serve as the head of an advisory board known as the Department of Government Efficiency—were among the ten individuals the outlet was considering for the person of the year honour.
