The eight-year search for a supposedly missing Rudy Farias has come to an unexpected end.
According to Houston Police, Rudy Farias, who was reported missing at 17 by his mother, Janie Santana, on March 7, 2015, lived at home the entire time investigators worked around the clock to find him.
Farias, now 25, had returned to his mother the day after she called authorities about his disappearance but had used fictitious names when he was reported as missing, according to Houston police Lt. Christopher Zamora during a press conference on July 5.
“He made contact with patrol officers out on the street,” Zamora said, adding that officers searched Santana’s home “several times” throughout the years-long inquiry. “However, during these contacts, officers were given fictitious names and dates of birth, and Rudy would go missing.”
Furthermore, anytime individuals questioned Farias’ identity, Santana referred to him as her nephew and “continued to deceive police by remaining adamant that Rudy was still missing,” according to Zamora.
The eight-year search for a supposedly missing Rudy Farias has ended unexpectedly.
At this time, neither the son nor his mother has been charged, though Zamora warned that police might pursue Santana with a misdemeanor for failing to disclose that Farias had returned.
Houston police chief Troy Finner stated during the press conference, “We can’t predict motivation.”
“The investigation is still ongoing,” Finner noted, “and I’m not going to say whether or not he’s a victim.”
According to NBC News, a Texas man in a church barely eight miles from Santana’s home spotted Farias earlier this week.
His family issued a statement following his finding, stating that he was unresponsive and nonverbal when discovered.
“What we do know is that during his recovery, a good Samaritan discovered him unresponsive and immediately called police and 911,” the family told NBC News. “My son Rudy is receiving the care he requires to recover from his trauma, but he is currently nonverbal and unable to communicate with us.”
According to authorities, Farias is still at his mother’s house.
