According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to trade for New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the NFL draft next month.
The source spoke to The Associated Press on Sunday on the condition of anonymity because the deal cannot be finalized until Wednesday when the new league year begins and Mac passes a physical.
Jones returns home — born and raised in Jacksonville — and adds competition for starter Trevor Lawrence.

Jones will compete with 30-year-old C.J. Beathard for the team’s backup job. In the last year of his rookie deal, Mac will be charged $4.96 million against the team’s salary limit, while Beathard is expected to earn $2.4 million.
The Jaguars are unlikely to keep both on the 53-man roster to begin the season.
The 15th overall pick in the 2021 draft, Mac, had a dismal season and Bailey Zappe eventually took his place. Jones finished 2-9 in 11 starts in 2023, throwing for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

He has 46 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions in three NFL seasons. He made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2021, but his performance dipped in his second year with former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia calling plays.
With the third overall pick in the draft, the Patriots, under the direction of head coach Jerod Mayo, are likely to select a quarterback. Potential candidates include LSU’s Jayden Daniels, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.

The Jaguars’ offence is projected to undergo insignificant adjustments in 2024. They re-signed left guard Ezra Cleveland, negotiated a lower cap figure for the final year of right guard Brandon Scherff’s contract, and intend to add an experienced centre to compete with third-year player Luke Fortner. If Calvin Ridley leaves Jacksonville in free agency, the receiver may be a top draft pick.
