CITY OF NEW ORLEANS — A source familiar with the deal confirmed on Monday that former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr had signed a four-year deal with the New Orleans Saints.

As the deal with the free-agent veteran quarterback had not yet been made public, the source spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

Carr spent nine years in the Raiders’ lineup, setting franchise marks in passing yards (35,222) and touchdown passes (240). (217). However, he was never able to secure a victory in the postseason. Carr also had a poor finish to the 2017 season, which led to him being benched for the final two games.

Carr’s release from Las Vegas came on February 14 after he refused to waive the no-trade clause in his contract; his 32nd birthday is on March 28. By that time, $40.4 million of his contract would have become fully guaranteed over the next two years, making it imperative that Las Vegas either trade for or release him.

Currently, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, Dennis Allen, was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders when they made their second-round draft pick in 2014, selecting Carr out of Fresno State. That season, Allen coached Carr for only four games before being let go.

With this move, the Saints have brought some stability to a key position in question following their 7-10 season in 2022.

Even though Jameis Winston is signed with the Saints through 2023, New Orleans can release him. His base salary for 2020 is $12.8 million, and he only started three games before losing his job to Andy Dalton in 2022, partly because of a back injury.

After getting hurt in Week 1, Winston tried to play through it in Weeks 2 and 3, but he was sacked seven times, threw five interceptions, and threw for only two touchdowns.

Dalton completed 66.7% of his passes for 2,871 yards with 18 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in 14 starts, but the Saints stuck with him even after Winston said he was healthy enough to play again and wanted another chance.

Dalton, who is 35 and has played in the NFL for 12 years, will be a free agent after the 2018 season ends.
