the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said the recall covers Sweet Cream mini patisserie four-kilogram boxes and one-kilogram trays

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, mini pastries have been associated with 61 salmonella cases nationwide, 17 requiring hospitalization.

According to the agency, the Sweet Cream mini pastries have been delivered to bakeries, hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, retirement residences, and catered events. t said 33 of the 61 illnesses are in Quebec, 21 in Ontario, four in British Columbia, two in Alberta and one in New Brunswick.

The Food Inspection Agency stated on Sunday that individuals contracted illnesses between late September 2024 and mid-December 2024.

“Many people who became sick reported eating mini pastries at catered events or other establishments where the recalled product was served.”

According to the agency, the age of the individuals who contracted the illness ranges from three to 88 years old, with 61% of them being female.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a notice regarding the recall of Sweet Cream mini patisserie four-kilogram boxes and one-kilogram trays. The best-before dates of these products range from June 17, 2025, to and including November 15, 2025.

It stated that individuals who are healthy and infected with salmonella might experience short-term symptoms, including fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhoea. The infection can be more severe for young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Public health officials have stated that the investigation is still ongoing and that, due to the time between illness and reporting, additional cases may be reported in the outbreak.

The warning follows the recently issued recall of eggs related to salmonella.

Because of a potential salmonella contamination, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recalled specific brands of eggs in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and other regions.

The agency announced on Saturday that the recall was initiated based on test results, and no illnesses have been reported.

The egg recall pertains to Compliments, Foremost, Golden Valley Eggs, IGA, no name, and Western Family eggs, all of which expire February 16, February 22, or March 1.

What is salmonella

Salmonella, or salmonellosis, is a bacterial infection that causes diarrhoea, fever, and stomach pain. It typically resolves spontaneously within a few days.

Drinking an abundance of fluids is crucial for preventing dehydration. Adhering to safe food handling practices and washing your hands after interacting with animals can mitigate your risk of contracting salmonella.

You usually don’t treat salmonella with medication. However, if you’re severely ill or at high risk for complications, your healthcare provider will prescribe antibiotics. If you have severe diarrhoea, you may need to be hospitalized.

How do I manage the symptoms of salmonella?

The most important way to manage the symptoms of salmonella is to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Fluids that help you stay hydrated include:

  • Water.
  • Sports drinks.
  • 100% fruit juices with water added.
  • Broth.
  • Oral rehydration solutions (like Pedialyte).

For adults, over-the-counter medications like loperamide (Imodium) and bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol, Kaopectate) can help stop diarrhoea. Don’t give diarrhoea medications to children or infants without talking to your paediatrician.
