“I’ve never been motivated by money or prizes.” So I’m not shocked that it still isn’t,” Downey said at the show’s premiere at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles last week.

While “Downey’s Dream Cars” is geared toward car enthusiasts, it is not limited to that demographic. Downey tries out new genres in an eco-friendly “Pimp My Ride,” part autobiographical and part documentary about the latest advances in clean technology.

“That was certainly the idea, to try to innovate a little bit in this kind of storytelling,” he explained.

Downey relinquishes control of his beloved assets in each episode, allowing experts to transform his antique cars into more environmentally sustainable vehicles by turning them electric, changing them to operate on biodiesel gasoline, or even affixing them with mushroom leather. Downey hopes it will provide a glimpse into the future of sustainability and promotes optimism by highlighting what is currently achievable as well as what technology progress promises.

“Anytime there’s been a real emerging technology that was probably going to be significant, there’s always a well of fear and hope,” he added, suggesting that both should be balanced even if he believes it may be used for good. “I’m not concerned, but I believe we should have proper guidelines in place.”
