Princess Anne Gives Rare Interview Ahead Of King Charles III’s Coronation

Do you want to know what kind of king King Charles III will be? Princess Anne, his sister, has an idea.

“Well, you know what you’re getting because he’s been practicing for a bit, and I don’t think he’ll change,” she told CBC News in an interview on May 1. “He’s committed to his level of service, and that will remain true.”

While Charles took the throne after Queen Elizabeth II died in September, he and Queen Camilla will be officially coronated on May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London.

So, how are the royals preparing for the next chapter?

“We’ve been very lucky,” Anne explained. “For a long time, my mother was the queen.” And, while you know this could happen, you don’t give it much thought—not least because the monarchy is all about continuity. But I know my brother has been looking forward to this, and he’s probably spent more time thinking about it. For the rest of us, it’s more a case of “OK, we need to change the way we support, and that’s what we need to do.”

Anne will be essential in assisting Charles on the day of his coronation.

“I have a role as Colonel of the Blues and Royals in the Household Cavalry regiment as Gold-Stick,” she told the news outlet. “The first close protection officer was Gold-Stick. So I was asked if I wanted to play that role for the coronation. As a result, I said yes. Not to mention that it solves my outfit problem.”

The coronation of King Charles III will be the first for the British royal family in 70 years. The most recent was for Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, when Prince Charles was four years old. Princess Anne, who was just two at the time, was not present.

“The entire service will be different in many ways,” the prince, now 72, explained. “He was old enough to have attended my mother’s coronation.” I don’t know what his impressions were. I was not permitted to leave, which was appropriate at that point in my career. It could have been far more trouble than it was worth.”

And, while Anne claims that Charles’ coronation will be “such a different scenario,” its importance remains.

“There’s so much in that service that you have to do that’s fundamentally important,” she later explained. “It is the coronation’s meaning in every way.” It’s more than just a major event. It is a critical component of the Crown’s responsibilities.”
