LONDON, England — British police announced Tuesday that they had launched a major search for a two-month-old baby after arresting the infant’s mother and boyfriend, who had been missing since January.
Constance Marten, 35, and her convicted sex offender boyfriend, Mark Gordon, 48, The Coulple had been on the run since the baby was born in early January. They’ve been spotted nationwide, and police say they tried to avoid detection by paying for everything in cash and covering their faces when caught on camera.
Marten and Gordon were arrested late Monday in Brighton, southern e, on suspicion of child neglect following a tip from a member of the public. The baby was not with them, so police immediately searched the area.
“It is a vast area, and at the moment, we are looking in the local vicinity of where the couple was arrested last night, seeking a shelter or location for where they may have holed up, and hopefully where the baby is present,” Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford told the BBC.
The Couple gave birth in or near the car just a day or two before
Officers were seen Tuesday searching a golf course, allotments, and woodland near where the couple was discovered.
Marten and Gordon were missing for several weeks after The couple car was discovered abandoned and on fire on the side of a highway on January 5.
Police believe Marten gave birth in or near the car just a day or two before, and officers expressed growing concern for the family’s well-being because medical professionals had seen neither the couple Marten nor the baby.
The search involved dozens of officers, and more than 600 hours of CCTV footage was reviewed.
According to reports, Marten, who comes from a wealthy, aristocratic British family, was a drama student when she met Gordon.
