Palestinian Authority Renews Request For UN Membership
According to a post on X from the Palestinian Permanent Observer mission to the UN on Tuesday, the Palestinian Authority has again requested membership in the United Nations.
“Today, the State of Palestine, upon instructions of the Palestinian leadership, sent a letter to the Secretary General requesting renewed consideration to (our) membership application,” the message said.
Riyad Mansour, the United nations Ambassador for the Palestinian Territories, has signed a letter that refers to an initial membership status application from September 2011 and asks for renewed consideration this month.

In September 2011, the Palestinian Authority failed to gain united nations recognition as an independent member state. A year later, the UN voted to upgrade the Palestinian Authority’s status from “non-member observer entity” to “non-member observer state,” as it had done with the Vatican.
The Palestinian Authority, led by the Fatah political party, maintained administrative control over Gaza until 2007 when Hamas won the 2006 parliamentary elections in the occupied territories and was evicted from the strip. Since then, Hamas has administered Gaza, while the Palestinian Authority rules portions of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The United States supports a reformed Palestinian Authority that leads both the West Bank and Gaza as part of a future independent state. However, Israel has opposed the Palestinian Authority’s return to Gaza following the continuing war, as well as the idea of establishing a Palestinian state in the territory.
On Sunday in Ramallah, a new cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Mohammed Mustafa received its official oath of office, according to the Palestinian official news agency WAFA.
