Babar Azam, Pakistan’s cricket captain, has stepped down days after his team’s group-stage exit from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, the star batter revealed in a statement.
Beginning in October 2019, Babar captained Pakistan in all three formats, leading them to the top of the ICC one-day international (ODI) rankings for the first time in May.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has named opening hitter Shan Masood the next test captain, while bowler Shaheen Afridi will captain the Twenty20 (T20) team.
Pakistan dropped out of first place after finishing fourth in the Asia Cup and sixth in the World Cup.
“It’s a difficult decision, but I feel it’s the right time for this call,” the 29-year-old said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I will continue to play for Pakistan in all three formats.” With my knowledge and passion, I am here to assist the new captain and the squad.”
His resignation came just two days after that of Pakistan bowling coach Morne Morkel.
“After consultation with his family, Babar decided to step down and PCB stands behind his decision,” the company stated.
Azam is classified as a top-five batter by the ICC in all three formats, and he is Pakistan’s most successful skipper in T20 Internationals, with 42 victories.
Pakistan will embark on a difficult trip to Australia, where they will play three Tests beginning on December 12 in Perth.
They have lost their last 14 Tests in the country, with their one triumph coming in 1995.
