Following a brief interruption of OpenAI’s ChatGPT service in the early hours of Tuesday, the service experienced another large disruption during the day in the United States. “ChatGPT is unavailable for some users,” OpenAI stated in its status update. “We are currently investigating this issue.” The second round of troubles began at 10:30 a.m. ET, with thousands of reports of issues appearing on Downdetector.
Many users of the ChatGPT mobile apps and web service were not receiving responses; however, at approximately 1:17PM ET, OpenAI announced the issue had been addressed.
Around the same time as ChatGPT was experiencing difficulty, several users reported issues with Google Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude AI, and Perplexity AI web search. Google Gemini looks to be widely available, and people were able to reactivate Claude rather fast. Perplexity stated that its AI search tool was also operational around 1:30PM ET.
The most recent big outage for ChatGPT occurred in November, when the service was unavailable for around 90 minutes, affecting OpenAI’s API services. The API appears unaffected by the last outage. OpenAI later confirmed that the November outage was the result of a DDoS attack.
Last month, a Microsoft outage also disabled ChatGPT search features, as well as the software giant’s own Copilot service.
