As Q3 2023 Comes to an End, Online Platforms are on the Rise
(V.News) – During the third quarter of 2023, guests booked 309.4 million nights of short-term rental housing in the EU through Airbnb, online platforms, Expedia Group, or TripAdvisor.
This is an increase of 13.4% over the same time in 2022. With this value, platform tourism continues to exceed pre-pandemic levels and set new monthly records: in July, 115.7 million nights were spent in accommodation booked through online platforms, representing a 10.7% increase over July 2022.
In August, this figure rose to 124.7 million nights (+11.7% compared to August 2022), while in September, it reached 69.1 million (+21.6% compared to September 2022). During the first nine months of 2023, visitors spent over 546.2 million nights in EU short-term rental accommodations booked through online platforms.
This is a large increase over the same time in 2022 (488.6 million nights; +11.8%), with nights spent significantly above pre-pandemic levels (423.7 million nights in the first nine months of 2019; +28.9%).
Eurostat released online platforms at the national level
For the third quarter of 2023, Eurostat released information on short-term accommodations provided by online platforms at the national level. Additionally, regional data for the second quarter of 2023 is being released.
As part of an agreement with the European Commission in March 2020, these data were collected from four private collaborative economy platforms. Regional data are released one quarter later than national data, according to the rules set out in the agreement.

Top destinations for the second quarter of 2023: Spanish, Croatian, and French areas. In Q2 2023, the most popular regions for short-term rental lodging booked via online platforms were Andalucía in Spain (7.1 million nights), Jadranska Hrvatska in Croatia (6.5 million), and the French region of Île de France (5.8 million).
Spain has seven of the top twenty regions, France and Italy each have five, Portugal has two, and Croatia has one.
