SAN FRANCISCO -The iPhone is in the spotlight once again. It appears to have primarily been a false alarm almost a week after the Apple faithful collectively gasped at the first indication that the iPhone’s red “end call” button could soon be moving from its center location to take up residence one column to the right.
The initial shock came after last week’s beta release of iOS 17, the upcoming significant update to the iPhone’s operating system. Users noticed the end-call button there for the first time. It had previously lived in magnificent isolation in the lower right corner of a six-button block, well below function buttons like “mute,” “keypad,” and “speaker,” but now it has joined its peers and taken a more assimilated position.
The iPhone is in the spotlight once again.
Now, screenshots of the most recent iOS 17 beta show the red button back in the phone’s dial pad’s center, quite close to where it has long claimed residence. It is still present, though, and is now seated in the center of the second row of that six-button block, where it appears to be daring you to try to hang up without also using the keypad or unintentionally including a new caller in your call.
It’s always challenging to draw clear conclusions from beta software releases, which are meant to aid engineers in finding bugs and determining how users react to significant and minor changes. They are, therefore, rather experimental by nature, with some experiments succeeding more so than others.
We can determine whether the iPhone’s end-call button’s wanderings have stopped. Apple normally doesn’t comment on its iPhone design process—or much of anything else—and the Associated Press did not receive a response to a request for comment.
