NIRF Ranking 2024-IIT Madras Tops Overall Rankings

The National Institutional Ranking Framework NIRF ranking 2024 was announced by the Ministry of Education. The best university in the country is IISc Bengaluru, while IIT-Madras is the top university in India in both engineering and overall categories.

The ninth edition of the publication has introduced three new categories: open universities, skill universities, and state-funded government universities. In addition, Anil Sahasrabudhe, the chairperson of the AICTE, declared that the Ministry intends to implement “sustainability rankings” as of the following year.

Institutes of Technology (IITs) have achieved the highest rankings in both the engineering and overall categories. In the interim, the best universities in India are IISc Bengaluru, JNU, and Jamia.

This year, the evaluation criteria have also been subject to modification. Medical institutes have changed the faculty-to-student ratio from 1:15 to 1:10, while state government universities have increased it from 1:15 to 1:20.

The ranking framework assesses institutions based on five main parameters: teaching, learning, and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.

Universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture and planning, colleges, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, state-funded government universities, skill universities, open universities, and innovation comprise the 16 categories into which the higher educational institutes are structured.

This year, a total of 10,885 higher education institutions participated. Up to 5,543 institutions of higher education participated in the NIRF last year.
