Prince Harry will attend his father’s coronation, King Charles III, at Westminster Abbey, while his wife, Meghan Markle, will remain in the United States with their children, according to Buckingham Palace.
The couple’s attendance at the coronation had been questioned, but it has now been revealed that Prince Harry will attend alone. On May 6, Prince Harry will be among around 2,000 guests at Westminster Abbey. It will also be Harry’s first appearance with the Royal Family since the publication of his explosive memoir Spare.
The severity of Prince Harry’s clashes with other members of the Royal Family were vividly depicted in his book, and he has since spoken of feeling “different” from the rest of his family. Next month, King Charles and the Queen Consort will be crowned in front of around 2,000 guests.
Meghan’s choice to decline the invitation will be considered part of the ongoing, unresolved family conflicts where she called the family racists.
The BBC reports that Prince Harry’s book and an earlier Netflix series underlined his anxiety about unfavorable media coverage, notably of his wife and claims of a lack of support from his family.
It was uncertain whether Prince Harry would attend his father’s coronation, but it has now been confirmed that he will, meaning King Charles will have both his sons there for the ceremony. The date also coincides with the fourth birthday of Prince Archie, who will stay in the United States with Meghan.
Meghan Accused of Snubbing Family
“The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th,” the pair said, echoing the palace. “Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will remain with the Duchess of Sussex in California,” Buckingham Palace stated.
Neither the couple’s spokeswoman nor Buckingham Palace commented on the decision, but social media was divided, with fans praising Meghan for sticking up for herself and opponents accusing her of “snubbing” her royal in-laws.
Prince Harry and Meghan were contacted about attending the coronation more than a month ago, sparking weeks of speculation about whether they would go. According to the release, Prince Harry will attend the historic occasion alongside other members of the Royal Family, public personalities, foreign leaders, and 450 charities and community organizations representatives.
Harry’s role in the event is unclear since he is no longer a “working royal.” Prince Harry and Meghan were not permitted to participate in the traditional appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The Prince of Wales is set to play a key role in the coronation, and after Prince Harry’s dramatic recounting of their falling out, there will be a focus on the two brothers being seen together again.
The Queen Consort’s grandchildren will be among those performing during the coronation, and Buckingham Palace has stated that it will be an “appropriate time” after that ceremony for her to be acknowledged as Queen Camilla.
In addition to the coronation ritual, the Royal Family is anticipated to attend a full weekend of public festivities and performances. However, how long Harry will be in the United Kingdom is unknown.
In March, Harry made a surprise appearance in London, attending a court hearing in a dispute against Associated Newspapers over charges of privacy violations. He was not thought to have met his brother, Prince William, or King Charles III during the visit.
