Hugo Wentzel, who was ousted from the ABC show after revealing he is Carter’s grandson, questioned if he has been able to meet the 39th commander-in-chief since filming the episode.

“It’s been getting harder and harder to see him,” the 24-year-old, whose mother is Carter’s daughter, Amy, told Entertainment Weekly in an August 8 interview. “My mother spends a lot of time with him.” Because of things like COVID rules, she now spends over half of her time caring for him. As a result, it is very family oriented. I haven’t seen him as much recently, but he knows I love him, and we’re there for him through this difficult time.”

Wentzel also discussed how the 98-year-old lawmaker is doing since his organization, The Carter Centre, disclosed in February that he receives home hospice care.

“He’s pretty sick,” he told the publication. “He still uses his brain. He enjoys listening to audiobooks. He’s an absolute genius. He’s quite intelligent. I adore him. He’s always wanting to do something with his head, so he’s trying to keep himself active, but he’s becoming worse and older.”

In addition to his grandfather, Wentzel discussed his grandmother, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, 95, whose dementia diagnosis was revealed in March.

“I just want to say that she’s an amazing woman,” he remarked. “She’s worked so hard her entire life.” She has made contributions to mental health. I want everyone to understand how vital and beautiful she is as a person and grandmother. Yes, she has dementia, and when I see her, she sometimes forgets what’s going on, but when she recalls, she’s amazing. “I adore her.”

Wentzel praised his grandfather for his personal and political impact after revealing he is connected to the Carters on the August 7 episode of Claim to Fame.

“He’s an amazing grandpa, honestly,” he told his fellow competitors. “I adore him to pieces. I refer to him as Papa. He led America and my family admirably. I support all he believes in. He believes in equality for everybody, regardless of race, class, gender, or any other factor. He’s a wonderful person. I hope to be like him someday.”

Wentzel also sent Carter a beautiful message. “Pappy, I adore you.” You’re incredible, and I’ll do everything I can to keep your legacy alive.”

Before leaving the show, he gave viewers one last bit of advice. “All I have to say is lead with love,” Wentzel added.
