Greta Thunberg Arrested At Oil Conference In London For 3rd Time In 2023

According to eyewitnesses, on Tuesday, Greta Thunberg was arrested outside an oil and gas conference – formerly known as the “Oil and Money” conference – at a fancy five-star hotel in London.

The Metropolitan Police announced many arrests outside a hotel on London’s Park Lane in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. However, it refused to confirm to CNN that Thunberg was among those arrested.

The 20-year-old was participating in a demonstration outside the Intercontinental Hotel, holding the Energy Intelligence Forum, an annual gathering of senior executives from oil and gas firms such as TotalEnergies, Shell, and Aramco.

Thunberg and other protesters attempted to prevent delegates from accessing the hotel by blocking entrances.

At the time of publication, the Energy Intelligence Forum had not responded to CNN’s request for comment.

Before her detention, Thunberg said in a statement posted by Fossil Free London, “we have no choice but to disrupt” since “our world is being swept away by greenwashing and lies.”

“The fossil fuel industry has actively distracted and delayed,” she noted. They have developed loopholes to continue doing business at the expense of the world. We’re choked on their fumes.”

Greenpeace stated that hundreds of protesters, including Thunberg, “faced a heavy police presence as they gathered in front of the luxury Park Lane hotel to protest against the influence of the fossil fuel industry on UK and global climate politics.”

According to the organization, protestors blocked all hotel doors at 8 a.m. local time while two climbers abseiled from the top of the structure, unfurling a 30-meter (98-foot) long banner reading “Make Big Oil Pay.”

According to Greenpeace, Thunberg called out “spineless politicians” during a news conference for meeting with oil industry lobbyists earlier in the day.

Greta is no stranger to police encounters during climate marches. Police held her in January during a coal mine protest, and in July, she was fined by a Swedish court for disobeying police after taking part in a June demonstration that stopped oil tankers in part of Malmö harbor, Sweden.

Greenpeace said Tuesday’s protest is the first of three days of action aiming at shutting down the conference.
