In Pennsylvania, a large manhunt is underway for a jail inmate who escaped just a week after being sentenced to life in prison for murder.

Danelo Cavalcante, 34, a Brazilian national, escaped from Chester County Prison in West Chester on Thursday morning.

He was sentenced to life in jail a week ago for fatally stabbing an ex-girlfriend in front of her two small children.

Cavalcante is also wanted in Brazil for murder.

At a news conference on Thursday, the prison’s interim warden, Howard Holland, gave no specifics about how the breakout occurred, simply indicating that an investigation is underway.

He was last seen wandering down a street in adjacent Pocopson Township about an hour after escaping prison.

Danelo Cavalcante, 34, a Brazilian national, escaped from Chester County Prison in West Chester on Thursday morning.

Residents within a six-mile (9km) radius of the prison were told of the breakout and advised to exercise utmost caution. Dozens of law enforcement agencies are now involved in the search, including using dogs, drones, and helicopters.

“If you see him, do not approach him,” urged Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan on Thursday. “We kindly request that you contact 911.” He is regarded as exceedingly hazardous.”

According to investigators, Cavalcante stabbed ex-girlfriend Deborah Brandao to death in front of her children, who were four and seven years old at the time. During the murder, Brandao was stabbed 38 times.

After fleeing to Virginia, he was apprehended hours later.

In a Facebook post last week, the Chester County district attorney’s office stated that Brandao “threatened to expose him to the police” after learning that Cavalcante had an open murder warrant in Brazil.

Ms. Ryan, the district attorney for Chester County, told the news outlet Local Daily News that Cavalcante, a former gang member, is suspected of murdering a man who owed him money in Brazil in 2017.

The United States Marshals Service and local officials are offering a $10,000 (£7,889) reward for information leading to his arrest.
