Conservative pundits, usually Donald Trump’s supporters, turned against him after he attacked Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Saturday.
During a speech in Pennsylvania, Trump referred to DeSantis as “Ron DeSanctimonious” while addressing the Republican presidential primary in 2024.
The two are widely regarded as the leading candidates for the Republican nomination, while DeSantis has not indicated his intention to run. Commentators chastised Trump for sowing discord just three days before the midterm elections.
“DeSantis is a highly effective conservative governor who has achieved significant policy and cultural victories. Trump isn’t able to defeat this one with a stupid nickname.
He’d better have more up his sleeve than that, “Matt Walsh, a Daily Wire commentator and prominent social conservative, wrote about it.
“Also, wonderful work launching your public attack on America’s most popular conservative governor three days before the midterms when we’re all supposed to be putting on a united front,” he said.
“What an idiot,” Rod Dreher, senior editor of The American Conservative, wrote. “If you expect a leader to get a lot done, rather than just talking about it and owning the libs, DeSantis is a far more effective leader of the Right than Trump was.”
Ben Domenech, a Fox News contributor and editor at the Spectator, merely stated that Trump’s moniker for DeSantis “needs work.”
Many more prominent conservatives spoke out against Trump.
Trump’s comments on Saturday occurred while he reviewed current polling for the 2024 primary, which shows Trump with a massive lead.
“We’re outperforming everyone else in the Republican Party for the nomination. There you have it: Trump with 71%, Ron DeSanctimonious with 10%.”
Trump stated. “Mike Pence at seven, oh, Mike, Mike is performing better than I expected. Liz Cheney can hardly be at 4%. There isn’t a chance. There isn’t a chance. However, our score is 71 to 10 to 7 to 4.”
According to a presidential straw poll conducted at the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit, 78.7% of respondents supported Trump as the Republican nominee in 2024.
Another straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference in August revealed that Trump received 69% approval from delegates to run in 2024. DeSantis received only 24% of the vote.
Nonetheless, DeSantis has won the majority of the 2024 primary votes. According to a Republican poll in New Hampshire, the governor has a slim edge over Trump in a possible Republican primary in June.
According to the poll, 39% of prospective Republican primary voters in New Hampshire would support the first-term Florida governor, while 37% would favour the former president.
