Apple IPhones Sales Fall 24% In China Amid Competition And Headwinds

Apple has confirmed the date of its next major event, where the iPhone 16 is scheduled to be released.

On Monday, September 9, the tech titan will hold a unique event with the tagline “It’s Glowtime.” The event will begin at 10 a.m. PT in Apple Park’s Steve Jobs Theatre and will be online webcast.

Though it’s unclear what “glowtime” means, incorporated artificial intelligence will likely be a prominent component of the new iPhone.

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June announced a bevy of creative AI technologies for iPhones. The company presented the first wave of tools powered by “Apple Intelligence,” ranging from personalized Genmoji – Apple’s AI-generated emoji – to a substantially wiser Siri, which can answer queries about your schedule, what’s in your email, and what time your loved one’s aircraft is landing.

Though iPhone 15 Pro Max owners will likely have access to some AI functions, the next iPhone 16 is slated to be the first handset created entirely with AI in mind.

At the conference, Apple also announced a collaboration with ChatGPT maker OpenAI, which is experiencing scrutiny and issues.

Artificial intelligence has been used in various iPhone features for years, including Live Text and an improved autocorrect function over the original. However, stronger generative AI could build on those capabilities to improve interactivity and personalization, making the upcoming iPhone the first designed with some of those features in mind.

However, Angelo Zino, a CFRA Research technology analyst, believes the forecast for the iPhone 16 is subdued because the new AI functions will be carried out over the next few years – upgraded Siri, for example, may not be available until 2025.

“This is going to be more of an evolutionary process, rather than some big cyclical, iPhone cycle,” Zino informed reporters.

Generative AI enables systems to generate written content, graphics, and audio in response to user input.

According to observers, Apple will likely transition into artificial intelligence through Siri, the company’s virtual assistant. Combining Siri with OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT-4o model enables the assistant to recall a photo from years ago, deliver more specific information, and learn the user’s preferences and personality over time.

The debut has the potential to shift Apple’s iPhone strategy. iPhone sales in China have fallen due to uncertain economic conditions and increased competition.

One of the most pressing uncertainties surrounding the device’s arrival is how much it will cost. Apple fans have long questioned whether iPhone models should be less expensive, while investors seek maximum profit. CFRA does not anticipate a significant price hike for the iPhone 16, but adding AI capabilities “could potentially see them increase prices across the board,” Zino added.

Apple’s competitors have previously experimented with generative AI, such as Samsung’s “circle to search” function, which allows users to instantly search for information on a device’s screen using a finger gesture.
