NEW YORK – Jonathan Majors had more riding on him than any other performer. It is now breaking ways with him, upending years of ambitions for its movie universe.

According to a person close to the company who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t permitted to speak publicly about the topic, Marvel Studios and the Walt Disney Co. pulled Majors from all future productions following the actor’s conviction for assault and harassment on Monday.

Disney’s quick decision constituted a remarkable 180-degree turn for an actor who had been one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars. A Manhattan jury convicted Majors, 34, guilty of one minor assault charge and one harassment violation stemming from an altercation with his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari in March.

Jonathan, who was acquitted of another assault charge as well as aggravated harassment, will be sentenced on February 6. As he walked out of the courthouse, he declined to remark. According to Majors’ attorney, Priya Chaudhry, “it is clear that the jury did not believe Grace Jabbari’s story of what happened in the SUV because they found that Mr. Majors did not intentionally cause any injuries to her.”

“Mr. Majors still has faith in the process and looks forward to fully clearing his name,” Chaudhry said.

The highly acclaimed Majors was cast as the antagonist Kang the Conqueror as the superhero studio prepared phase five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character was intended to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next-phase response to Thanos, the villain of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Jonathan has previously appeared in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and the first two seasons of “Loki.” He was set to appear in “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” released in May 2026.

The fate of “The Kang Dynasty” is currently unknown. Disney has declined to comment on whether it will recast Kang’s role or move in a different direction.

The studio has been prepared for Majors’ departure from the franchise. The screenwriters’ strike lasted from May until late September, hampered Marvel’s capacity to create rewrites. The company recently hired Michael Waldron, a screenwriter, to rewrite “The Kang Dynasty.”

Jonathan’s resignation is the latest in a string of losses for Marvel. Despite its unrivaled box-office success—roughly $30 billion globally from 33 films—the superhero factory has recently faced some unusual challenges. With $204 million in international ticket sales, “The Marvels,” released in November, has been the MCU’s weakest performance in theaters.

Jonathan also starred as a troubled amateur bodybuilder in “Magazine Dreams,” which Disney-owned indie distributor Searchlight Pictures picked up after its January Sundance Film Festival premiere. Jonathan’s Oscar nomination was largely predicted after its premiere.

“Magazine Dreams” was supposed to hit theaters on December 8. However, before Majors’ trial, Searchlight pulled the picture from its release schedule. Instead, on the fifth day of the trial, Majors’ text messages were read aloud. Majors implored Jabbari not to seek medical attention for a head injury incurred in 2022, claiming that she had “no perspective of what could happen” if the truth was out.

Jonathan met with The Associated Press in late February, just a few steps away from where his confrontation with Jabbari would break out onto New York streets weeks later, as “Creed III,” featuring Majors alongside Michael B. Jordan, was being released.

Majors then sounded acutely aware that his meteoric rise could lead to a crash.

“Though I’ve not seen the boogeyman, I know it’s out there,” Jonathan said in a statement. “And I’ve been around long enough to see it coming. I’m not going down my rabbit hole of death, but it’s on its way. However, you outpace it. You remain out of the frame. “I’ll stay out of the picture.”
