NEW YORK — Marcus Stroman, a right-hander, and the New York Yankees agreed to a $37 million two-year contract on Wednesday.
Stroman receives a $1 million signing bonus and an annual salary of $18 million. He has a $18 million conditional player option for 2026 that may be exercised if he pitches 140 or more innings in 2025, potentially making the deal worth $55 million over three years.
The 32-year-old grew up on Long Island, around 55 miles from Yankee Stadium, and played for the New York Mets in 2019 and 2021 before opting out of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
Stroman joins the Yankees rotation, which most likely includes Clarke Schmidt and AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole. Carlos Rodón and Nestor Cortes are coming off injury-shortened seasons.

Stroman opted out of the final year of his contract with the Chicago Cubs, preceding a $21 million salary in 2024 to test the market. During his two seasons with Chicago, he finished 16-16 with a 3.73 ERA and earned $50 million.
Due to discomfort in his right hip and a rib cartilage fracture, Stroman missed six weeks of the previous season. He finished with a 3.95 ERA, his highest since 2018, but he has been consistently reliable throughout his career. He was named an All-Star for the second time last season.
Stroman has a 77-76 record with a 3.65 ERA since making his major league debut with Toronto in 2014. He missed the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but his 2021 campaign was one of his best, with a 3.02 ERA in 33 starts for the Mets. The Cubs then signed him to a potential three-year contract, but he declined his player option for 2024.
