LEWISTON, Maine – Patrick Dempsey speaks openly about his sadness following a terrible massacre in his hometown.
According to NBC News, the Grey’s Anatomy actress spoke out after a shooter killed at least 18 people and injured 13 others in a mass shooting at a pub and bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, on Oct. 25. Police have filed an arrest warrant for suspect Robert Card, 40, on murder charges and are still looking for him.
Dempsey responded to the incident on Instagram on Oct. 26, writing, “I am shocked, and deeply saddened by last night’s tragedy in my hometown.”
The actor, who was born and raised in the state’s Lewiston-Auburn region, spoke positively about his neighbors’ fortitude and concern for the victims of the shooting.
“Maine’s great strength is its sense of community, and now we are being asked to come together to support everyone that has been devastated by this senseless act,” he said. “My family and I are heartbroken for the victims, their families, and the community.”
The 57-year-old spent his first 12 years of life in Turner, Maine, before relocating to the nearby rural hamlet of Buckfield.
“Maine is very important to me,” he told Maine magazine in 2021. “I think one of the best pieces of advice I got was to never forget where you came from.”
He said, “I went from having the luxury of getting lost in the wilderness of Maine to the New York City life at 17, but my roots and my origin, if you will, are in Maine.”
The US Coast Guard joined the pursuit of Card, a firearms instructor and Army reservist, the day after the incident with a sea and air search.
According to his family, the suspect had been suffering from an “acute” mental health episode in recent months.
“He was picking up voices that he had never heard,” sister-in-law Katie Card told the site. “His thoughts were twisting them around. He was ashamed by what he thought was being stated.”
