ATHENS, Alabama – Keith Urban, a country artist, gave only a few hour’s notice before delivering a free concert Friday night in the parking lot of a major convenience store and gas station in north Alabama.
Hundreds of fans attended the event in Athens, roughly 100 miles (161 km) south of Nashville. It occurred outside Buc-ee’s, a chain of roadside restaurants famed for barbecue.

“I visited this Buc-ee’s about a month ago. And as I left, I thought, ‘It’d be kind of fun to do a show there,'” Urban told the audience during the event, according to an Instagram video provided by Huntsville, Alabama-based WAFF-TV.
Keith stated that his “cave man brain” told him it would be enjoyable to set up a modest stage for a small audience.
“I swear to you, I thought maybe 100, 200 people,” Urban remarked, while a video revealed a larger gathering.
People began assembling hours before the concert, according to news reports.

“I was at work, and we heard on the radio that there would be a surprise concert at Buc-ee’s in Athens,” Cindy Wilson told Huntsville’s FOX 54 WZDX-TV. “And I went, ‘Oh my God, it’s on my way home.'” And it’s only 15 minutes from my place. So I could not believe it.
While at the store, Urban worked behind a food counter. A video showed him wearing a Buc-ee’s T-shirt and apron as he poured barbecue sauce over brisket and cut it into smaller pieces.
