Justin Trudeau And Sophie Grégoire Trudeau Announce Separation After 18 Years
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his longtime partner Sophie Grégoire Trudeau announced their separation on Wednesday.
Mr. Trudeau, 51, has been married to Ms. Grégoire Trudeau, 48, for the past 18 years, and the couple has three children: Xavier, 15, Ella Grace, 14, and Hadrien, nine. In 2003, Mr. Trudeau met Ms. Grégoire Trudeau, a former entertainment journalist. In May 2005, they married in Montreal.
The couple’s divorce announcement was made on Instagram on Wednesday. Mr. Trudeau stated that the pair had “decided to separate” but “remain a close family with deep love and respect.” He also requested that the family’s privacy be respected for his children’s safety.
The Prime Minister’s Office said in a second statement that the Prime Minister and Ms. Grégoire Trudeau had signed a legal separation agreement.
“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps in connection with their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so in the future,” the office stated. “Both parents will be a constant presence in their children’s lives, and Canadians can expect to see the family often together.”

The Trudeaus’ children are likely to be co-parents. To ensure stability, the Prime Minister will continue to live in Rideau Cottage, as will his children. Mme Grégoire Trudeau maintains a separate residence in Ottawa. She will, however, continue to visit Rideau Cottage with her children and remain there when Mr. Justin Trudeau is away. The family is also planning a summer vacation in Canada next week.
The divorce is the first for a prime minister since his late father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, divorced his mother, Margaret Trudeau, in 1984, when the elder Trudeau resigned from politics.
The statement comes as Mr. Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party is suffering in the polls, battling Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives, who have made the affordability crisis a main emphasis of his leadership.
In May, the Prime Minister shared a photo of himself and Ms. Grégoire Trudeau holding hands on his anniversary, writing, “Every mile of this journey together is an adventure.” Soph, I adore you. “Congratulations on your anniversary!”

Mr. Justin Trudeau stated 2014 to former CBC reporter Evan Solomon, “Our marriage isn’t perfect, and we’ve had difficult ups and downs, but Sophie remains my best friend, partner, and love.” We are open and honest with each other, even when it is painful.”
When Mr. Solomon inquired if there was “coded language for extramarital affairs,” Trudeau replied, “No.”
“This is a discussion about the kinds of challenges that any real marriage faces.” “There have been tremendous ups and downs, but as I said, we are deeply in love and committed to each other, and we continue to be,” Mr. Trudeau told CBC.
