Justin Bieber is the latest foreign artist to sing for India’s richest man’s son and his soon-to-be wife as they prepare for their wedding.
The Canadian singer visited Mumbai over the weekend to perform for Anant Ambani, Radhika Merchant, and their friends.
He had high expectations to meet. The couple’s first pre-wedding celebration included Rihanna, while the second, a Mediterranean cruise, featured performances by 90s teen heartthrobs The Backstreet Boys, singer Katy Perry, and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.
So, with bated breath, Ambani wedding watchers – of which there are now legions worldwide – await word on who will perform at the wedding this weekend.
Rumors on the internet claim it could be Adele, but the family has remained silent.
Mukesh Ambani’s youngest son’s wedding will be lavish, surpassing even the most expensive Indian nuptials. It outperforms even his daughter’s wedding, which included a headline-grabbing performance by Beyoncé.
Last weekend, Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant held their sangeet ceremony, a night of song and dance preceding the wedding ceremony. In typical style, the Ambanis went above and beyond what guests would normally expect.
Mukesh Ambani, the CEO of Reliance Industries, with an estimated net worth of $115 billion, and the rest of the family performed their own choreographed dance to Bollywood artist Shah Rukh Khan’s blockbuster song, Deewangi Deewangi.
It was another opportunity for wedding-goers to admire the guests’ attire, including some of India’s most gorgeous stars dressed in gowns designed by the country’s top fashion houses.
Pre-wedding festivities appear to have become concerts and catwalks, with stars uploading professional photos on their social media profiles before the parties.
The cost of the three parties to date is unknown. Rihanna reportedly received $7 million (£5.5 million) for her performance, while Justin Bieber allegedly received $10 million.
It’s unclear what the weekend’s three-day event will entail. Some in India will be relieved that the wedding and its extravagance are done, while many in Mumbai hope it does not exacerbate the city’s notoriously awful traffic.
Radhika kept her cards close to her chest when she told Vogue US last month that wedding plans were “going great,” adding, “I’m very excited to be married.”
