(VOR News) – In his departure speech, Joe Biden warned that “an oligarchy is taking shape” and that it was weakening American democracy. Legislators responded in various ways, which seemed to confirm the president’s point.

On Wednesday, Vice President Joe Biden warned about the future of the United States in his final Oval Office address before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Joe Biden: “Our oligarchy threatens our liberties.”

Former president Dwight Eisenhower gave a farewell address in 1961. His warning about the “military-industrial complex” symbolized American corporate hegemony in democracy. Biden warned the US about a “tech-industrial complex.” This seemed to repeat Eisenhower’s statements.

Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos were targeted by Biden’s remarks. These individuals have unprecedented riches and lately publicly supported Trump. All three will likely attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday.

A few hours later, Biden’s address had become another ideological battleground, which is perhaps the most obvious sign of his presidency’s political polarities.

Nancy Pelosi, former House speaker and California Democrat, said on X that “President Biden delivered his farewell address to a nation that is stronger because of his leadership.” She praised “four historic years of progress, hope, and unity for American families.” Republican legislators seemed to be hearing a different conversation.

Georgia’s X representative calls Joe Biden’s legacy “failure.”

South Carolina representative Nancy Mace accused Biden of “calling them oligarchs and a threat to democracy” in his departure speech, targeting Americans. Biden did not mention China, Russia, or Iran, she said.

The differing views arose as Vice President Joe Biden prepared to hand over the office to Donald Trump. After Biden’s unexpected resignation from the contest in the summer of last year over age and credentials issues, Trump defeated Kamala Harris in November.

Vice President Biden praised his government’s infrastructure initiatives, clean energy policy, and prescription medication reforms. Democracy is uncertain, he warned. Under Biden, Obama noted “17 million new jobs, historic pay increases, and lower health care costs.”

Republicans denied it. Oklahoma congressman Kevin Hern tweeted, “Joe Biden’s presidency will be defined by dangerously liberal policies, failure, and weakness.” Florida senator Rick Scott said Biden’s speech “should have been a formal apology” for “inflation-fueling policies” and “endless welfare.”

With proposals for constitutional modifications to strengthen presidential accountability, the president warned about concentrated wealth and power. Trump’s words were relevant given his expected return to government.

Vice President Joe Biden campaigned on the idea that no president should be free from criminal prosecution for office-related actions. Some Republicans saw this as a partisan attack rather than a democratic objective.

Vice President Biden announced a groundbreaking Israel-Hamas ceasefire hours before his address, which may be his last diplomatic success. This accord could end Gaza’s 15-month bloodbath. Biden announced the agreement in April 2018 and Trump’s administration helped finalize it.

Bipartisan teamwork is rare, despite lawmakers dismissing it.

As expected, party lines separated opinions. Republicans counted down the days until Trump’s return, while Democrats—including Wisconsin Representative Mark Pocan—said they will “always be proud” of creating millions of jobs and restoring the economy.

Indiana Representative Rudy Yakym expressed optimism on X that President Trump will have enough time to prepare his crates after his speech tonight. In five days, President Trump will return to the White House.

Vice President Biden showed in his speech that his presidency, which began with the goal of reconciling a severely divided nation and strengthening the US spirit, ended with those divides still present.

Politicians quickly adopted their favored political view while mentioning a “crumbling” free press, more disinformation, and dark money in politics, all systematic issues that should transcend party lines.

Congressman Bennie Thompson commented, “We are sorry to see you depart, but the legacy you have established will continue to influence our society for years to come.” In contrast, Michigan Republican Lisa McClain said “January 20th could not come soon enough.”
