Joe Biden’s Last Acts as President Leave Some Transgender People Feeling Unsupported.
(VOR News) – President Joe Biden pledged to defend transgender Americans from Republican policies that depicted them as a threat to children and tried to exclude them from public life.
Joe Biden said to transgender individuals. “Your president has your back.” in his first State of the Union speech in 2021. He made similar claims in later speeches.
Joe Biden isn’t helping transgender individuals despite Trump’s support.
In addition to declaring that “it will be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders — male and female,” the president-elect promised to sign several transgender-targeted executive orders early in his presidency.
After the GOP retook Congress and the White House by leveraging Democrats’ trans backing, Biden and Democrats are battling transgender politics. Vice President Kamala Harris made a few transgender references during her campaign, but Trump’s team used them to persuade swing voters that she cared more about trans issues than the economy.
Democrats will remember the viral Trump ad slogan, “Kamala is for them/them; President Trump is for you,” for years.
Joe Biden approved a measure that bans transgender medical treatments for service members’ children and abandoned plans to protect transgender student-athletes in his final month in office.
His actions are typical: the outgoing administration abandons unfinished rules or passes steps to prevent the new president from retooling them to advance his agenda faster. However, transgender folks wonder why Joe Biden ignored steps that could have protected them from Trump’s policies.
The Associated Press reported that transgender woman Imara Jones, who founded the podcast “The Anti-Trans Hate Machine,” said the Biden administration has supported transgender people but not as much as the current anti-trans campaign.
Biden appointed transgender people to high-level positions, she said. He lifted a Trump-era restriction on transgender military service and let non-binary Americans choose a gender designation of “X” on their passports.
Kelly Scully of the White House said, “Under President Biden’s leadership, we have corrected historical injustices and advanced equality for the community, but there is more work to do, and we hope that work continues after he leaves office.”
In other cases, Joe Biden’s Justice Department filed declarations of interest and challenged Alabama and Tennessee statutes banning gender-affirming medical care for trans kids.
“Nonetheless, substantial gaps were established and persist,” stated Joe Biden.
“The government failed to protect trans health care, combat anti-trans violence, and enforce Title IX. The list goes on. The government may be protecting trans people temporarily.
Some LGBTQ+ supporters have accused Joe Biden of abandoning the transgender community after he signed the annual defence bill despite his objections to a provision that prohibits the military’s health program from providing some medical procedures for transgender children in military families.
Biden’s signing of the law is “in direct opposition to claims that his administration is the most pro-LGBTQ+ in American history,” said the largest LGBTQ+ veteran and service member organisation.
The Human Rights Campaign’s president, Kelley Robinson, has stated that this is the first federal law to specifically target LGBTQ+ individuals since the Defence of Marriage Act was enacted by Congress in the 1990s. This act defined marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman. Bill Clinton, the Democratic President, executed it; however, he subsequently expressed regret for his decision.
Most states risk lawsuits, but 26 have banned gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth. Arkansas and Florida federal judges have deemed the prohibitions invalid, but a federal appeals court has suspended the Florida judgement. In Montana, a court order temporarily halted a ban.
25 states ban trans women and girls from certain women’s sports contests. Judges have temporarily suspended Arizona, Idaho, and Utah’s prohibitions.
Trans rights groups were upset when Biden announced his now-canceled plan in 2023 to prohibit outright bans on transgender student-athletes, alleging it gave institutions the power to remove athletes from teams that reflected their gender identification.
The sports plan, which was meant to follow a more comprehensive Title IX ruling protecting LGBTQ+ students, was repeatedly delayed.
In an election year, Biden’s delays were seen as a political manoeuvre because to Republicans’ fury over trans athletes in girls’ sports. If the rule had been completed, conservative legal challenges like those that prevented the Title IX policy in dozens of states would have been there.
