Jeremy Renner, 52 Opens Up After Snowplow Accident That Almost Killed Him
Hollywood actor Jeremy Renner claimed he would risk being driven over by a snowplow again to save his nephew in his first interview since the New Year’s Day disaster, “I’d do it again because it was aimed directly at my nephew.”
Jeremy Renner discusses the tragedy and his difficult rehabilitation in an interview with journalist Diane Sawyer, which will air Thursday night on ABC News.
The 52-year-old Oscar nominee, well known for his role as Hawkeye in Marvel’s Avengers films, shattered over 30 bones and required many surgeries.
The accident occurred near Mr. Renner’s Nevada residence. Over the weekend, heavy snowfall had fallen, and Mr. Renner’s vehicle, driven by a family member, became stranded.
According to the Washoe County sheriff, Mr. Renner went to get into his snowplow, which weighs at least 14,000 pounds, to assist in moving the vehicle. Sheriff Darin Balaam stated that the snowplow began to roll while he was speaking with a family member. Mr. Renner tried to return inside but was run over.
“I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone due to this experience.” But I’ve been refueled and renewed with love and titanium,” Mr. Renner said in video footage posted ahead of the interview’s appearance on ABC News.
Mr. Renner stated that he expected to die.
“I’m thinking, ‘What does my body look like?'” “Am I just going to be a spine in a brain, like a science experiment?” Jeremy Renner wondered.
Rich Kovach, Mr. Renner’s neighbor, informed 911 operators that Mr. Renner had been “run over by a snowcat,” according to WSJ. In the background of the conversation, Mr. Renner could be heard moaning.
“It was blood, the amount of blood, and then he was in such pain,” Mr. Kovach explained to Ms. Sawyer. “When I looked at his head, it appeared to be cracked wide open.” And I thought I saw white; I’m not sure if that was his skull or if it was just my imagination, but that’s what I thought I saw.”
Mr. Renner had shattered bones, including both ankles, some ribs, his right shoulder, eye socket, and jaw. He also has a collapsed lung.
Mr. Renner began to cry during the interview after Ms. Sawyer reminded him that when he could not talk in the hospital shortly after the accident, he motioned “I’m sorry” in sign language to his family.
“I was signing that because I am, I’m sorry,” Mr. Renner explained, adding that he was grateful to his family for their support during rehabilitation. “What we’ve just gone through. That is true love. It is in pain. “However, that feeds the seeds of what love is,” Mr. Renner explained.
