WHO Launches Appeal for 1.5 Billion Dollars for 2024 Emergencies

(VORNews) – In 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched an appeal for US$1.5 billion to protect the health of 41 vulnerable populations around the world.

More than 87 million people are expected to benefit from the appeal, which covers emergencies requiring the highest level of response from WHO. In the current situation, complex emergencies spanning conflicts, climate change, and economic instability continue to fuel displacement, hunger, and inequality.

There is often a difference between life and death when essential health services are disrupted during an emergency. Women giving birth during conflicts, children suffering from droughts, and those undergoing cancer treatment or dialysis are all beneficiaries of health care.

WHO Director-General, said health services are also crucial

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said health services are also crucial for breaking the cycle that too often leaves communities in a perilous state and reliant on emergency assistance.

With your support in 2024, life-saving health care will be provided, critical health supplies and equipment will be distributed, and essential health services will be maintained to provide continuous care to patients.

Funding supports direct access to health care for communities in hard-to-reach areas, partnerships with local organizations, and effective response to outbreaks and attacks on health workers.

Furthermore, building resilience to future threats and maintaining existing healthcare systems are important actions. In the appeal, the importance of funding is noted for supporting those with humanitarian needs.

WHO provides a return on investment of at least 35 dollars?

WHO provides a return on investment of at least 35 dollars for every US dollar invested. With US$ 334 million, the African Region would receive US$ 334 million; with US$ 705 million, the Eastern Mediterranean Region would receive US$ 705 million; with US$ 183 million, the Western Pacific Region would receive US$ 15.2 million; Southeast Asia would receive US$ 49 million; and the Americas Region would receive US$ 131 million.

“Through the support of donors, we will save lives, meet critical health needs for the most vulnerable, and help communities recover from crises stronger and better prepared for the future.

WHO is grateful for all the support it received in 2023, which enabled us to assist millions of people. It is more important than ever that the international community stands united and supports us in 2024,” Dr Tedros said.
