General Motors recalls approximately 820,000 pickup trucks due to a potential safety issue with tailgates.
General Motors Recalls Nearly 820,000 Pickup Trucks
According to the company, the electronic latch mechanism used to open the gate of some 2020-2024 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra truck beds may short circuit if water enters the tailgate. That means the gate may mistakenly open while the car is parked, allowing unsecured items in the bed to fly out when uninformed drivers hit the road.
General Motors did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.
In a report uploaded on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, General Motors stated that it got over 130 complaints about the tailgate opening while driving. However, the corporation stated that the gate can only be opened while the vehicle is parked.

“(The) control logic in the body control module (BCM) would prevent release of the tailgate latch when the vehicle is in gear, even if the BCM receives a release signal from the exterior touchpad switch,” the company stated, warning owners to manually close their tailgate before driving until the recall is completed.
General Motors stated that it got one complaint for minor injury and three for minor property damage.

The recall affects around 570,000 vehicles sold in the United States and approximately 249,000 in Canada. Dealers will replace the outside switch that opens the tailgate with a water-resistant material.
On March 18, General Motors announced that it would begin informing customers about whether their vehicle is affected.
