Macron appointed Georgelin to lead the renovation of Notre Dame after a fire destroyed the cathedral in 2019.
The French army general overseeing the reconstruction of Paris’ Notre Dame cathedral died on a mountain walk.
The cathedral is being reconstructed to its original design, including the collapsed wooden spire during the fire. The French government hopes to finish the project by 2024 when Paris will host the Olympics.
The general died while hiking in Ariege, in the Pyrenees, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV. CNN has not been able to corroborate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Between 2006 and 2010, Georgelin was Chief of Staff of the Armies, and between 2010 and 2016, he was Grand Chancellor of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour.
