After several weeks of personal and legal hardship, Pete Davidson is taking time off to focus on his mental health.
According to People, the Bupkis actor has entered rehab but is expected to leave soon. According to Page Six, claiming an unnamed acquaintance and anonymous sources, and TMZ, citing people familiar, Davidson is seeking treatment for PTSD and borderline personality disorder.
The news of Davidson’s current rehab stint comes more than a week after the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged the actor with one misdemeanor count of careless driving concerning a March automobile crash in Beverly Hills, Calif. There were no reported injuries. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 27. E! News had earlier contacted his representative for comment but had not received a response.
Following leaked images showing himself and his girlfriend, Chase Sui Wonders, at a pet store, Davidson sparked outrage among animal lovers for purchasing a puppy rather than adopting.
He raised even more eyebrows after leaving an expletive-filled message for a PETA representative who criticized him to TMZ for not adopting a dog.
The Saturday Night Live star claimed in his statement that he was “only not allergic to Cavapoos and those type of dogs” and wanted to bring his mother a puppy after her dog Henry died at the age of two.
He mentioned his mother, Amy, and sister, Casey’s sadness, and the released film to explain why the criticism elicited such an intense response.
After several weeks of personal and legal hardship, Pete Davidson is taking time off to focus on his mental health.
“Then this organisation (PETA) made a public example of us, making our grieving situation worse,” he explained to TMZ. “I’m annoyed. It was an unfortunate choice of words. I should not have spoken what I did, but I am not sorry for defending myself and my family.”
Davidson has been upfront about his mental health difficulties throughout the years. He attended trauma counseling in 2022 after Kanye West frequently bashed him on social media for his relationship with now-mutual ex Kim Kardashian, E! News claimed.
Davidson first discussed his battle with BPD on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast in 2017, when he revealed that he had undergone rehab the previous year and that one of his psychiatrists had diagnosed him with the condition, which the National Institute of Mental Health defines as a “mental illness that severely impacts a person’s ability to manage their emotions.”
“I started having these mental breakdowns where I would, like, freak out and then not remember what happened after,” the actor explained. “Blind rage.”
Davidson reportedly ascribed part of his current mental health struggles to the death of his fireman father, Scott, in the line of duty during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. “My big thing is trust,” remarked the actor, who was 7 years old at the time. He was here one day and then gone the next.”
