Chinese animated hit Ne Zha 2 has become a massive success in Hong Kong, leading the city’s box office four straight days after its release. So far, the film has earned over $2.07 million in the region, making it the top-grossing movie of 2025 in Hong Kong.
The follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster Ne Zha debuted in Hong Kong on February 18 and began screening in theatres on February 22. Since its Lunar New Year release on the mainland, the film has drawn praise for its fresh take on the legendary story of Ne Zha, a mythical warrior from Chinese folklore. Its modern storytelling and high-quality animation have thrilled audiences.
The Hong Kong premiere, held at a venue in Causeway Bay, attracted a mix of celebrities, cultural figures, residents, and Hong Kong and Macau distribution team members.
Industry experts commended the film for its top-notch visuals and engaging story. To keep up with the demand, some theatres, like the Festival Grand Cinema in Kowloon Tong, added frequent showings.
After attending early screenings, two Hong Kong residents shared their thoughts. One said, “I don’t usually watch animated films for adults, but this one is incredible. Chinese animation can now compete with, or even surpass, international productions.”
Another viewer added, “Chinese animation has come so far. Compared to movies from six years ago, the visuals are brighter, the artwork is stunning, and the storytelling is full of surprises.”
Ne Zha 2 Push Chinese animation to new heights
LO Shuk-pui, Director of the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau of Hong Kong SAR, highlighted the teamwork behind the production. “The script is outstanding. It’s sharp, the characters feel real, and the dialogue is excellent. I heard the project involved 138 companies over five years. You can see the hard work and skill on screen,” she said.
WONG Bak-ming, Chairman of the Oriental Film Company, reflected on the film’s cultural importance. He noted how the Ne Zha series has brought traditional Chinese folklore onto the world stage, proving that Chinese animation can deliver international-level results.
He added that everyone involved takes pride in this achievement.
As of February 18, Ne Zha 2 had earned more than $1.698 billion globally. It has surpassed Inside Out 2 as the highest-grossing animated film ever and now ranks in the top eight on the all-time global box office chart. Due to ongoing demand, its screening period on the Chinese mainland has been extended to March 30.
From its roots in mythology to its record-breaking success, Ne Zha 2 continues to push Chinese animation to new heights, blending cultural traditions with worldwide appeal.
