After being diagnosed, the 76-year-old completed three months of chemotherapy; however, the treatment ceased to be effective, and the tumor continued to grow. “I cannot pretend that there have been no dark moments in the past year,” he told The Guardian then. “However, those dark moments have, you know, emphasised the brightness of the day and made me extraordinarily appreciative of each day and my companions. Simply grateful to be alive.”
