Nominations for the Golden Globes: Barbie leads the pack in 2024, with Oppenheimer close behind.
Greta Gerwig’s Neon comedy received nine nominations, followed by Christopher Nolan’s Atomic Biopic with eight, and Emma Stone’s fantasy Poor Things and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, both receiving seven.

Greta Gerwig’s pastel-colored satire has been nominated for nine awards, including best picture (comedy or musical), screenplay, director, leading actress for Margot Robbie, supporting actor for Ryan Gosling, and three distinct submissions in the original song category.

It is Gerwig’s first nomination for directing, following omissions for Lady Bird and Little Women, and the haul makes Barbie the second most-nominated picture ever at the Globes, tied with Cabaret in 1972 and trailing only Nashville, which received 11.

Barbie is also nominated for a new prize for blockbuster films, including Oppenheimer, whose unusual association with Barbie significantly increased the summer movie office and sequels to John Wick, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spiderman, and Mission: Impossible. Taylor Swift’s concert film and the Super Mario Bros. animation were also included.

Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic of atomic scientist Robert Oppenheimer trails with eight nominations, including votes for leading actor Cillian Murphy, supporting actress Emily Blunt, and supporting actor Robert Downey Jr.

Those poor things. With seven nominations, Yorgos Lanthimos’ strange fantasy about a lady resurrected with a baby’s brain performed better than expected, neck-and-neck with Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

For the former, Emma Stone is nominated for leading actress in a comedy or musical, while Lily Gladstone is nominated in the equivalent drama category. Annette Bening for the swimming thriller Nyad, Sandra Hüller for the Palme d’Or-winning Anatomy of a Fall, Greta Lee for the sentimental weepie Past Lives, and Cailee Spaeny for Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla are among Gladstone’s competitors.

Meanwhile, Stone faces a surprisingly diverse field of competitors, including Jennifer Lawrence’s bawdy portrayal in No Hard Feelings, Natalie Portman’s barbed melodrama in May December, and Fantasia Barrino from the upcoming musical adaptation of The Color Purple.

In the equivalent male category, Paul Giamatti is the clear frontrunner for his performance as a grumpy teacher in Alexander Payne’s 1970s-set comedy The Holdovers, ahead of Matt Damon (Air), Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario), Timothée Chalamet (Wonka), Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction), and Joaquin Phoenix (Beau Is Afraid).

Da’Vine Joy Randolph, his co-star, is also rumored to be in the supporting actress roster, which also includes Emily Blunt for Oppenheimer, Jodie Foster for Nyad, Julianne Moore for May December, Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple, and Rosamund Pike for Saltburn.

Emerald Fennell’s contentious second movie also won Barry Keoghan a nomination for leading actor in a drama, opposite Bradley Cooper for his Leonard Bernstein epic, Maestro. Other nominees include Murphy in Oppenheimer, Colman Domingo in the civil rights thriller Rustin, and Leonardo DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon.

In All of Us Strangers, Andrew Scott plays a screenwriter who meets his long-dead parents; yet, this is the lone nomination for Andrew Haigh’s picture, which swept last week’s British Independent Picture Awards.

Along with Oppenheimer, another British director’s film, Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, stars Hüller and Christian Friedel as Hedwig and Rudolf Höss, who created an idyllic home for themselves and their children just outside the gates of Auschwitz, where he was camp commandant, is gaining traction in mainstream Hollywood circles as well as the festival circuit.

Mica Levi’s score was nominated for Best Drama, Foreign Language Picture, and Best Score. Its distributor, A24, received 11 nominations, as did Universal, which released Oppenheimer. Barbie’s haul helped Warner Bros. earn 12 nominations, while Netflix received 13 nominations for their films and TV series – a smaller lead than in previous years (they had 20 in 2023).

British productions are also heavily represented in the television categories, with Succession competing for nine Oscars, eight for cast members and one for outstanding drama.

Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, and Elizabeth Debicki have all been nominated for their roles in The Crown, which is also nominated for best drama. Helen Mirren is honored for her performance in 1923, while Rachel Weisz is nominated for her role in the daring miniseries Dead Ringers. David Oyelowo’s involvement in Lawman: Bass Reeves is well recognized.

Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the candidates; the presentation will occur on January 7, four days before Oscar voting begins.

The Golden Globes’ influence on the Academy Awards is debatable: last year’s Globes were dominated by The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin, both completely overlooked at the Academy Awards.

The ceremony is the first to be televised on CBS after the conclusion of the Globes’ long-running partnership with NBC. It is also the first since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which previously voted for and organized the Globes, was disbanded this summer.

The HFPA was created in 1944 to gain access to celebrities for the foreign-language press. It has long been plagued by controversies that have harmed its reputation. In addition to sexual assault scandals, publicist boycotts, and allegations of various ethical errors involving possible bribery, the HFPA came under fire in 2021 when it was found that none of its 91 voting members were Black.

After being sold to Dick Clark Productions, the HFPA was disbanded, and the Globes’ assets, which were previously a nonprofit, became a for-profit entity. A new leadership team was recruited following a restructuring that should provide better accountability.

The membership has grown to 300 from 75 countries, with many new members being minorities. However, the body’s composition is significantly different from that of Bafta and Oscar voters, who number 6,000 and 10,000, respectively, and are made up of people working in the business rather than reporting on it.
