Britney Spears’ Memoir A Million Seller After Just One Week Since Its Release
NEW YORK – Britney Spears’ biography “The Woman in Me” sold 1.1 million copies in its first week in the United States alone.
In a statement made public on Wednesday by Gallery Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, Spears said, “I poured my heart and soul into my memoir, and I am grateful to my fans and readers around the world for their unwavering support.”
Pre-orders, print sales, e-books, and audiobooks are all included in the sales data. Critics have praised “The Woman in Me,” which debuted on October 24, as a compelling account of her ascent to global fame and ongoing struggles, including the conservatorship that gave her father control over a large portion of her life for years and her admission that she had an abortion more than 20 years ago while dating Justin Timberlake.
Spears announced on Instagram on the day of publication that her book had become “the highest-selling celebrity memoir in history.” So far, it is not even the best-selling memoir of 2023.
Britney Spears’ biography “The Woman in Me” sold 1.1 million copies in its first week in the United States alone.
Last week’s best-seller was “The Woman in Me,” for which she received little press outside of Instagram. However, Prince Harry’s memoir “Spare,” released in January, sold 1.6 million copies in the United States in its first week.
According to Luminate, a music and entertainment analytics business, Spears’ biography helped improve streaming and revenues throughout her entire song catalog. Spears’ catalog increased 18.2% in on-demand streams and 36.8% in album sales in one day last week, from Monday to Tuesday. The figures continued to rise in the days that followed. According to Luminate, her U.S. streams climbed 24% in one week, from 16 million to 19.8 million; her album sales increased 61.4%, and digital sales increased 49%.
Those figures appear to reflect those of another pop star memoirist: when Mariah Carey released “The Meaning of Mariah Carey” in September 2020, she experienced a similar increase — 28.6% — during release week.
However, Spears’ streams are 657 million this year, down from 703 million in 2021, when she witnessed tremendous growth owing to the #FreeBritney movement.
The audio edition of “The Woman in Me,” read by Oscar nominee Michelle Williams, appears to have played a significant role in the book’s initial popularity. Williams’ performance of “The Woman in Me” has received critical acclaim, and Gallery claims it is the fastest-selling audio product in the company’s history. The publisher did not immediately release an audio sales statistic.
According to Circana, which covers roughly 85% of the print industry, “The Woman in Me” sold slightly under 418,000 copies in its first week, significantly less than the first week Circana figures for former President Barack Obahttps://apnews.com/article/britney-spears-memoir-million-sales-35fa0d265a45a5b67618554fe4cefc5ama’s “A Promised Land” and former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Becoming,” among other memoirs.
No nonfiction release compares to J.K. Rowling’s final Harry Potter book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which debuted in 2007 and sold almost 8 million copies in its first 24 hours.
