Since then, the Oppenheimer star has expressed her “appallement” at having said “something so insensitive and hurtful.”
Blunt recalled filming the documentary Looper in the United States and described her encounter with the restaurant attendant at a local establishment during the interview.
Jonathan Ross, a program host, remarks at a Chili’s location, “You can see why so many of our American friends are enormous if you dine there.”
Blunt responds, “The young lady who was assisting me was enormous.” She likely received complimentary lunches at Chili’s.
“That is not a problem at all,” Ross responds.
The actress, aged 40, proceeds to elaborate on the encounter, detailing how the hostess came to recognize her.
On Friday, Blunt, who also appeared in The Devil Wears Prada and A Quiet Place, issued a statement expressing regret for the remarks.
She told People magazine, “I just need to address this head-on because my jaw was on the floor while watching this clip from 12 years ago.”
“I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show.”
She further states, “I have consistently regarded myself as an individual who would never intentionally cause distress; therefore, whatever motivated me to utter such remarks at that moment is incomprehensible to me, as is the cause I advocate.”
“However, it nevertheless transpired, and I expressed my apologies for any distress it may have caused; I said it.” I was well beyond the age of discernment.”
