How’s everyone doing? The answer is not terrific.
When Elmo, the Muppet, naively asked how people were doing on X (previously Twitter), hundreds of users responded, sharing their sadness and sorrow.
The Sesame Street character has answered, saying he’s “glad he asked” and using the hashtag “#EmotionalWellBeing”.
US President Joe Biden concurred, writing, “Our friend Elmo is right: We have to be there for each other.”
A well-known children’s television character asked a straightforward question on Monday morning, and that was the beginning of it all.

“Elmo just checked in! “How’s everyone doing?” he inquired on X.
The internet breaks down collectively.
“Elmo “I’m suffering from existential dread over here,” said one user.
“Every morning, I can’t wait to get back to sleep. Every Monday, I can’t wait till Friday. Another added, “Every day and every week for the rest of my life.”
“The world is burning around us, Elmo,” YouTuber Steven McInerney stated.
Celebrities like actress Rachel Zegler joined in, stating she was “resisting the urge to tell Elmo that I am kinda sad”.
Perhaps Elmo’s question was timed wrong.
It would never end well, asking such a question on a Monday morning in January at the end of a month that many people believe has gone on indefinitely.

But the hairy red-haired Muppet was unconcerned by everyone throwing their problems on him.
On Tuesday night, he posted: “Wow! Elmo is happy he asked! Elmo realised how vital it is to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will check in shortly, pals! Elmo loves you. #EmotionalWellBeing.”
Other Sesame Street characters also spoke out to defend their comrade.
The Cookie Monster wrote, “I’m here to talk it out whenever you want. I will also supply cookies. #EmotionalWellBeing”
Ernie’s best friend, Bert, said, “I’m here if you ever need a shoulder to lean on.” “I’ll make us both a warm cup of tea.”
Sesame Street also got involved, posting a link to mental health resources on its official X account.

President Biden complimented Elmo’s efforts to assist people’s emotional well-being, saying he agreed with the puppet.
“I know how difficult it is some days to remove the clouds and return to brighter days,” the president wrote on X.
“We have to be there for each other, offer our help to a neighbour in need, and above all else, ask for help when we need it. “Even when it’s difficult, you’re never alone.”
